The accountability app for friends who actually notice
Not a screen blocker. A 15-second check-off at 9pm that four people can see, and a Tuesday that does not go unmentioned.

First, which kind of accountability app this is
Rootmates does not monitor your phone, block apps, filter websites or email anyone a report about what you looked at. That is the other product category with the same name, and if that is what you came for, this is not it.
This is the habits kind. You choose what you are trying to do every day, you tick it off, and a small group of friends sees the same list you do. Nothing is watched. Something is simply visible - which turns out to be the part that was missing. A Reddit user in r/iosapps described the gym version of the problem in six words: nobody cared if I went or not
.
What accountability looks like day to day
It is smaller than people expect. Three things happen, and none of them is a lecture.
- The check-off. Open the Today tab and you get one short list: your habits, plus any challenge you joined. Tap what you did. That is the whole ritual and it should take about fifteen seconds.
- The evening nudge. If the day is nearly over and something is still open, the app tells you what is left - the habits by name, and which of your squad are already in. It states the day; it does not scold about it.
- The squad room. Chat, photos, and each closed day landing in the conversation in order, next to what people were saying at the time. Reply, react, pin the message everyone needs. It is a private room for a handful of people, not a feed.
That last one is why a group chat is not enough on its own. As a Reddit user in r/SideProject put it, our group chats were terrible for accountability
- everything scrolls, and the day nobody mentions is the day that disappears.
Why guilt-free matters
Because guilt is why people delete habit apps, and a deleted app notices nothing. Read enough threads about habit trackers and the same phrase keeps surfacing as a feature request: no streak guilt
, wrote a Reddit user in r/AndroidAppTesting. Another, in r/TestersCommunity: No guilt trips. Miss a day?
Rootmates is built so a bad day costs you a day, not the whole thing. A habit set to four days a week is kept on the other three - no broken streak on the third rest day. For a daily habit you genuinely missed there are freezes: the wallet holds two, you spend one, the chain holds, and a spent one grows back after four fully-kept weeks in a row. Meanwhile every check-off you have ever made still counts toward your level, from Seed and Sapling through Strong Tree and Ancient Tree to The Oak, and that number never resets.
There is one deliberate piece of friction. The app reports facts - logged, not logged, the streak. It does not announce your decisions. Spending a freeze, or stepping back for a week, is something you say to your squad yourself. Being made to type it is the point.
An accountability buddy app that starts with one person
You do not need to assemble four people first, and trying to is how this dies in the planning stage. Install it alone, put your habits in, and send the invite link to one person - the one who would actually ask about it, not the one with the best week. A Reddit user in r/getdisciplined: knowing someone else will see if you fail makes a huge difference
.
A squad in Rootmates is what grows out of that one invite, never the thing you need in advance. Regular squads have no end date and they see your whole list. Your habits stay yours - a group is a lens on them, not their owner. Download walks through the five steps.
How challenges work
A challenge is the time-boxed version, and it is the easiest way to get a friend in who has never used a habit app. One habit, one crew, a set number of days: plank for thirty days, run three times a week for a month. It gets its own group with its own chat and countdown, and an invite link that works for people who are not in any of your squads and have never installed anything.
Challenge members see only the challenge habit and everyone's count in it - never the rest of your list. When it ends you get a recap with everyone's final number, and then you either go again with the same crew or turn it into a regular squad and keep going. 75 Hard with friends is the long version of the same mechanic.
Questions
Is this an accountability app that monitors my phone?
No. Rootmates does not watch your screen, block apps, filter anything or send reports about your browsing. It is a habit app: you tick off what you did, and the friends in your squad see the same list you do.
Do I need an accountability buddy before I can start?
No. Install it alone, set up your habits, and invite one person whenever you are ready. The invite is a link you paste into a chat and it works for someone who has never opened the app.
What do my friends actually get told?
Facts about the day: what is logged, what is still open, and the streak. Decisions stay yours - if you spend a freeze or step away, you tell your squad in your own words rather than the app announcing it for you.
Does it cost anything?
Rootmates is free to download on the App Store, and there is a web app at root-mates.com that runs in a browser. Android is coming.
