Get it on iPhone
Rootmates is free to download on the App Store. It was released on 10 September 2026 and it is the only official build - there is no beta channel, no sideload, and no third-party mirror.
Open the App Store listing, or tap the badge:
If you are reading this on an iPhone in Safari, there is also a banner across the top of the page that goes straight to the listing. That is Apple's, not ours.
Use it in a browser
You do not need the app to start. The web app runs at root-mates.com in any modern browser - sign inwith Google and you are on today's list. It is the same account and the same data as the phone, so signing in on the laptop at work and checking off on the phone at night is one habit, not two.
There is also a demo with no sign-up at all if you want to see the screens before you hand over an email address.
Android
Android is coming. The listing is not public yet, so there is nothing honest to link to and we are not going to link to something that will 404 the moment you tap it. Write to feedback@root-mates.com with the word Android and we will tell you the day it is live. In the meantime the web app works on an Android browser.
What you need
- An iPhone running iOS 16.4 or later, per the App Store listing's compatibility line.
- An account. Rootmates needs one - your habits and your squad have to live somewhere you can reach from a second device.
- One friend, eventually. Not on day one. You can set the whole thing up alone and invite someone on Thursday.
Five steps to your first check-off with a friend
- Install it alone. Do not wait until you have talked three people into it. Almost nobody arrives here as a formed squad of four, and a group you are still recruiting is a group that never starts.
- Add your habits.Yours, not a group's - water, a workout, ten pages, whatever you actually want to hold. Set each one to daily, or to a number of days a week when that is the honest target. Four days of gym a week is a real habit, and it counts as kept on the other three.
- Invite one person by link. One. The link goes straight into a chat and works for someone who has never opened the app before. Pick the person who would actually say something, not the person with the best gym schedule.
- Check off each day. Open the Today tab, tap what you did. That is the whole ritual and it should take about fifteen seconds. Your friend sees the same list.
- Use the squad room. Every group has one: chat, photos, and each closed day appearing in the conversation in order, next to what people were saying at the time. Reply, react, pin the message everyone needs to read. It is a private room for a handful of people.
What it costs
Free to download on the App Store. That is the download, and it is the only pricing claim on this page - the listing is the thing to check before you install, not a marketing page that might be a month behind it.
What you get for that: your own habits on a daily or days-per-week schedule, squads with no end date, the room, time-boxed challenges with an invite link and an end-of-run recap, freezes for the days life takes, and a level built out of every check-off you have ever logged - Seed and Sapling through Strong Tree and Ancient Tree to The Oak, and it does not reset. There is no public feed and no follower count, and nothing you log leaves your group.
If something goes wrong
Write to feedback@root-mates.com. It is read by one of the two people who build the app. Support covers reporting a person or a message, and deleting your account is a page of its own that works whether or not the app is still on your phone.
If you want to know what you are getting into first, the habit tracker with friends page says exactly what your squad can see and what stays yours.
