Who builds Rootmates

What Rootmates is

Rootmates is a daily habit app you use with a small group of friends. You pick your own habits, you check them off each day, and the handful of people in your squad see the same list you do. There is no public feed, no follower count, and nothing you log leaves the group. The whole product is one sentence: friends who notice when you don't.

It runs on iPhone, Android and in a browser. A day takes about fifteen seconds: open the list, tap what you did, close the phone.

Where it came from

Rootmates grew out of a 75-day challenge app the two of us built and ran with our own friends. That app had a finish line, and the finish line turned out to be the problem. People closed day 75, celebrated, and stopped. The part that worked was never the number. It was that six people could see whether the box had been ticked that morning, and someone would ask about the Tuesday you went quiet.

So we took the deadline out and kept the witnesses. Regular squads in Rootmates have no end date. Only challenges are time-boxed, because a crew that agrees to thirty days of planks really does finish.

Who builds it

Two people: Tamir Heyman and Eyal Benedek. That is the entire team. There is no support desk behind us, which is why the address further down this page reaches one of us rather than a queue. Tamir Tzion Heyman is the operator of record - the name on the App Store listing and on the privacy policy.

What has shipped, and when

Rootmates for iPhone was released on the App Store on 10 September 2026. The listing says it requires iOS 16.4 or later.

Rootmates is also available on Google Play for Android. The web app lives at root-mates.comand runs in a browser, including on a laptop.

How to reach the team

feedback@root-mates.com - bugs, questions, account problems, a feature you want, a correction to something on this page. One of the two of us reads it. Support has the rest: how to report a person or a message, and how to delete your account.

How the guides on this site are written

Some of the pages here compare Rootmates to other habit apps, which means we are marking our own homework. Four rules, so you can tell when we are doing it badly:

• We install every app we compare. If a page says what another app does on the day you skip, somebody here skipped a day in it. We do not describe an app from its own store screenshots.
• We cite the research we lean on, by name and by link.If a page says something about how long habits take or what a friend watching changes, the study is linked and you can go read it. We do not use the widely circulated "65% versus 95% accountability" numbers, because nobody has ever produced the study they come from.
• Every page carries the date it was last written. Apps change. A comparison written in September is a comparison written in September, and it says so at the top.
• No invented proof. No testimonials we did not receive, no star ratings, no user counts, no awards. If we cannot show you where a number came from, it does not go on the page.

The guides

Start with the one that sounds like your week: the habit tracker with friends, the accountability app with friends, restarting habits after you quit, the group habit tracker, the habit tracker for couples, and 75 Hard with friends.

If you are comparing apps rather than reading about habits, there is the HabitShare alternative, the Habitica alternative, and the round-up of habit trackers you can use with friends. Longer pieces go on the blog.
