Habitica alternative: friends who notice, not a party of avatars
Habitica's iPhone listing still advertises guilds. Its Google Play listing mentions them zero times. Here is what the game does better than us, and what it costs you.

What Habitica actually is
Habitica is a role-playing game with your to-do list inside it. You have a character. Ticking a task off feeds it, skipping one hurts it, and the social layer is a party of friends fighting the same monster. The listing says it straight: Parties let you team up with friends for extra accountability and battle fierce foes by completing tasks
. Challenges are the other shared object: Challenges offer shared task lists you can add to your personal tasks
.
It is free to download with in-app purchases, including a one month subscription at $4.99, three months at $14.99, six months at $29.99 and twelve months at $47.99, plus gem packs from 4 gems at $0.99 to 84 at $19.99. On the US App Store it holds 4.3 from about 3,351 ratings, on version 4.0.7, last updated 20 August 2026. It is rated 13+ for messaging and user-generated content.
Three things it has over Rootmates. The game loop is real and no habit app without one can copy it. Its community dwarfs ours. And it runs on iPhone, Android, the web and Wear OS today, while we run on iPhone and in a browser.
The guilds discrepancy, read on both stores today
The two listings for the same app disagree. On 17 September 2026 the US App Store description still lists guilds. The Google Play description of the same app contains the word guild
zero times. Several 2026 App Store reviews say they were removed.
A 1 star review titled Moving in the WRONG direction!!!!
opens with The guilds were the soul of this app.
- App Store review. A 2 star review titled Was great, now not
says I loved Habitica for its community and the guilds you could join. Now that those are gone, I no longer feel motivated to keep up with my tasks.
- App Store review. A 3 star one reports Theres no add friend or join/create guild feature ob mobile, it only shows the party I created
- App Store review.
We have no statement from the publisher and will not invent one. What both listings say is that the iPhone one is arguably out of date. If guilds are why you are there, check before you renew.
Why people leave a game that works
Usually for one of two reasons, and both are about people rather than the game. The first is that the party dies. The 2 star reviewer again: Each party I've been in has slowly died, and now I cannot go to a guild to meet others to reform a party.
- App Store review. A party of strangers has nothing holding it together once the novelty goes.
The second is that the game becomes the work. Gold, gems, damage, equipment and quests are a second system to maintain on top of the habits, and at 11pm it can quietly become the thing you are actually doing. For some people that is the point and it holds for years. For others the day they stop caring about the character is the day the habits go too.
There is a harder one. A 1 star review titled Works but the bullies aren't worth it
reports Recently I was bullied out of a party for not wanting to join a challenge due to my mental health.
- App Store review. Open parties carry that risk. A group of four people who already know each other does not.
What Rootmates keeps, and what it drops
It keeps the three parts of Habitica that have people in them. A squad that sees everyone's habits and how far through today each person is, which is the party without the boss fight. Challenges with one habit, one crew, a set number of days, an invite link and a recap. And a collective streak, so the group carries a number together.
It drops the rest: no avatars, no gold, no gems, no equipment, no bosses, no damage. Miss a day and nothing is destroyed. A habit set to four days a week is kept on the other three. For a daily habit you genuinely missed there are freezes: the wallet holds two, you spend one and the chain holds, and a spent freeze grows back after four fully-kept weeks in a row.
There is one growth layer and it only goes one way. Every check-off puts a root down, and your level runs from Seed and Sapling through Strong Tree and Ancient Tree to The Oak. It never resets. Squads are private: no public feed, no follower count, and no open parties to be thrown out of, because the only way in is an invite from someone you know.

Who should stay on Habitica
Stay if the game is the reason it works. If a character you are keeping alive is what gets you to tick the box, friends-can-see-it does not replace that. Stay if someone in your group is on Android or in the web app, because we are not there yet. Stay if you have years of tasks and equipment in it.
Move if the part that ever worked was the party and it kept dying, or if the game became the job. Rootmates is the small version: people who already know each other, one shared streak, a room to talk in. The habit tracker with friends page covers what a squad sees, and the round-up weighs both against seven other apps.
