How an app got on this list

One rule: a friend has to be able to see your habits inside the app. Not a share button, not a screenshot you picked on a good day. Somebody else opens their phone and your day is there, good or not.

Rootmates is our app. It sits at number five because it has about 1 App Store rating and runs on iPhone and the web only. The four in front have more people or more years. The order is our judgement, not a measurement.

The nine, ranked

1. HabitShare - Habit Tracker

The default answer. Free, with no in-app purchases listed at all. You add friends and choose which habits each one sees; habits are private by default. Daily comments and gif messages. 4.6 from about 662 US ratings. Best for: two or three friends who want this free on any phone. Weakness: last updated 27 January 2023 on iPhone, with no groups, group chat or challenges. Longer comparison.

2. Habit Huddle - Social Habits

The most group-shaped of the lot. Join a huddle, check in daily with a note or photo, and the huddle builds a shared Checkin Chain beside your own streak. Leaderboards with seasonal resets, replies, vacation mode, freezes. Free, with in-app purchases including Builder Monthly at $16.00 and Builder Yearly at $107.99. Best for: building alongside strangers. Weakness: public huddles are genuinely public - its homepage leaderboard shows real first names next to the habit they track.

3. Daily Pact - Habit Tracker

The most complete private-group feature set at the lowest price. Groups with invite codes, group challenges, an activity feed, leaderboards, freezes, and PactPause, where the group votes on your pause request. Up to 50 members per group. Free, with Pro at $0.99 a month, $9.99 a year or $39.99 once. Best for: ten or more people who want a leaderboard. Weakness: new, with 4 ratings and no track record.

4. Habitica: Gamified Taskmanager

A role-playing game with your task list inside it. Parties of friends fight the same monster by completing tasks; challenges are shared task lists. Free, with in-app purchases including $4.99 for one month and $47.99 for twelve, plus gem packs from $0.99. 4.3 from about 3,351 US ratings. Best for: people the game works on. Weakness: parties of strangers die, and the iPhone listing advertises guilds Google Play never mentions. Longer comparison.

5. Rootmates - ours

A squad of people who already know each other, all on one screen, each with their habits and how far through today they are. Every squad has a room with chat, photos, reactions and pins. Challenges run on an invite link and end with a recap. Squads carry a collective streak, and the freeze wallet holds two, a spent one growing back after four fully-kept weeks. Free to download. Best for: three to six friends who want a room, not a leaderboard. Weakness: iPhone and web only, about 1 rating, and one week on the App Store.

6. Habit Tracker, by InnerGrow

The biggest audience here by a wide margin: 4.8 from about 146,830 US ratings. The listing describes Group Habits, for tracking habits with friends or loved ones, and Friendly Competition. Free, with Monthly Premium at $2.99, yearly at $7.99 and lifetime at $9.89. Best for: a big, well-maintained tracker that also does groups. Weakness: the social part is two lines in a listing about tracking alone.

7. Habitify: Habit Tracker

A polished solo tracker with a competitive layer bolted on. The social feature is one phrase, Friendly challenges, plus monthly challenges and leaderboards. No groups, no chat, no shared habits. Free, with in-app purchases including Pro Monthly at $8.99 and Pro Yearly at $49.99. 4.6 from about 7,124 US ratings. Best for: wanting a monthly leaderboard. Weakness: friends never see your habits, only your position.

8. Habitat - Group Accountability

The purest group streak here. Make a habitat for one habit, invite friends, and the group streak only goes up if everyone completes. Free, with Premium at $5.99 a month or $35.99 a year. 4.6 from about 549 US ratings. Best for: a group that wants one shared number. Weakness: last updated 14 October 2023.

9. Streaks

The best-built app here and the thinnest social layer. $5.99 once, no in-app purchases. An Apple Design Award winner, 4.8 from about 27,349 US ratings. Sharing is one line: you share tasks with other Streaks users so they can encourage you. Best for: one person who wants a beautiful tracker. Weakness: Apple-only, capped at 24 tasks, no groups, chat or challenges.

Three well-known trackers that did not qualify

• Finch: Self-Care Pet. About 752,236 US ratings at 4.9, and the only friend in its App Store listing is the bird.
• HabitBox. Its listing describes no friend, group, sharing or challenge feature at all.
• Griply. The listing never mentions sharing, social or challenges; its only groups are groups of tasks.
